What A Prison Design Means To Prisoners

By Anita Ortega

In order to correct a mistake, one should induce disciplinary measures. This is in order to set things clear to the person who committed the act so that the next time around, he would know what to do. This is also one way of educating somebody to adhere to his social responsibilities.

Nowadays, there are so many people who do not have the sense of propriety. They simply live in the world like they are the only living creatures. The concept of absolute freedom make them concerned only of their own affairs to the extent of breaking social norms. Because of this, a disciplinary and rehabilitational institution emerged and that is the prison. This place is built to house offenders of the law and an effective prison design has been sought for.

This design actually plays an important role. It provides a better avenue for the detainees to realize their mistakes. It is not cozy or comfortable, but it should definitely not look like an animal cage. Before, jails are designed in a different way. Its goal is to make the detainees regulate their behavior.

During the earlier years, the structure of prisons is that of a circular building that has a central tower. The guard is situated at the center of all the corridors in order to see all the cells. Also, the place where they are, is not lighted in order for the prisoners not to see them.

The goal of this design is to put the detainees in a constant state of surveillance. This way they should be able to keep themselves from doing stupid things and be able to regulate their actions. This is a slow process of inculcating discipline into them so that when they are released, they already know how to control themselves.

However, there have been cruel penalties in prison that does not seem appropriate. The presence of torture and other inhumane actions make it a failure for these institutions to fulfill its function of rehabilitating detainees. Instead, it has adhered more into inducing punishment and making life for prisoners seem like a living hell.

Because of this, a project calling the attention of architects was conceptualized and that is to create a more effective structure for a prison. It is a design that will reduce the pressure among the detainees and make a good avenue for realization. This way, worse scenarios will cease taking place.

There has been a recent proposal to incorporate a venue for detainees to interact with criminal case students. The building is structured in such a way that there be interaction a room for betterment. Not like the previous designs which totally isolates the detainee, leaving him there to deal with his own loneliness.

Prisoners are also people. They understand and they have emotions too. If only they are well handled and educated with the right things to do, they will certainly improve. This is what an effective structure can do. But design does not have all the say, the system in running the jail should go together.
